TOPIC: EVIL DIVIDENDS OF POLYGAMY
TEXT: GENESIS 30:1-13.

🔑KEY VERSE: "And when Rachel saw that she bare Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and said unto Jacob, Give me children, or else I die" (GENESIS 30:1).

Polygamy breeds envy, jealousy, resentfulness, covetousness, ill will, spleen and bitter hatred. Little wonder then that God, in His infinite wisdom, ordained one man, one wife for humanity. That the two young ladies, Leah and Rachel, were sisters did not prevent them from experiencing the unpalatable consequences of polygamy.

In today's text, Rachel, green with envy, developed a suicidal tendency. However, Jacob reproved his wife for the graceless statement she made. Rachel failed to know that it is only God that can make barren women mothers of children.

From her desperation to have children, she gave Bilhah, her handmaid as wife to Jacob so that she could adopt the children. The error of envy in this decision of hers was that Leah's children should normally be closer to her than the children of Bilhah, a slave lady. Rachel further demonstrated her envy by christening the two children of her handmaid names that connoted rivalry and strife. Leah in her rivalry persuaded her husband to marry Zilpah, her own handmaid.

This shows a clear demonstration of the evil, mischief and psychological anguish in polygamy. Jacob might be justified because in his era, there was no Bible to read nor pastor to preach on the danger of polygamy. Do believers of today have an excuse to go into polygamy? No. There is no problem in a christian marriage that God, in His unlimited power, cannot solve. With faith in God, problems such as barreness, sickness, poverty, misunderstanding and so on, can be fixed and are therefore no excuses for disobeying His word. Believers are to ensure that they hold on to the word of God and preach against polygamy.

✍THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Polygamy breeds envy, hatred, bitterness, hypertension and death.

Succinct lessons from Dr William Kumuyi's sermon on Sunday 28/10/2018.

Topic: Divine Prescription For Serving God Acceptably
Text: Chronicles 13.

1. Time does not change God's word.
2. Uzza had good intentions, yet he was wrong.
3. Check up your foundation. If any decision is wrong at the foundation, correct it.
4. Man may consider it a mistake or misdeed, but God calls it a sin.
5. Do not attempt to modernize God's principles for Him, just as the Israelites used animals to bear the Ark.
6. Seek to always follow the ways of God.
7. That it seems good, or that everyone seems to embrace it, does not make it right. David consulted with all the elders including the entire nation, and obtained their consents, yet the decision was wrong.
8. In all your consultations, ultimately consult with the Scriptures.
9. Whatsoever the scriptures say is FINAL.
10. Activities cannot take the place of righteousness.
11. Sanctify yourselves before working for Him.
12. Just one verse of God's word is greater than all the wisdom of men.
13. Never spite God's men, God's children or people in authority.
14. Many so called Christians hinder their progress with their tongues.
15. Never despise anyone, even in your heart.

By strength no man can fulfil these expectations of himself, so Lord, we ask for GRACE. Have mercy on us, fill us with your grace. In Jesus' name.

ROB NOT GOD OF HIS GLORY

TEXT:ACTS 12:20-25

🔑📖 KEY VERSE:"And the people gave a shout, saying, It is the voice of a god, and not of a man" (ACTS 12:22).
One aspect of Africa’s idolatrous practices is the art of giving praise names to flatter and honour people who are held in high esteem. The unbelieving Africans shower praises and by-names on great people during important occasions to adore and exalt them for their positions and accomplishments. In that process, men are sometimes given praises for what is obviously done by God. The heathens are oblivious that praises due unto God should not be given to or received by any man.
In the text, King Herod was flattered by the people of Tyre and Sidon who came to appease and conciliate him in order to regain his favour and love as he was their benefactor. They ascribed to him honour and glory due unto God. They shouted with one voice after the elegant and royal speech of King Herod that his voice was the voice of a god and not of a man. It should be realised that our God is a jealous God who will never share His glory or praises with anyone. No wonder, an angel of God struck Herod dead and was immediately eaten up by worms. God will definitely be glorified upon anyone who refuse to glorify Him.
No child of God should allow anyone to give him any praises due unto God. When a believer is praised or flattered, he should direct the glory to God immediately. Praise names, cognomens, bynames, flatteries and undue praises are the properties of Satan and his agents, which no believer should accept.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Self-exaltation leads to public humiliation.

BEWARE  OF  DECEIT

TEXT: JOSHUA 9:3-16

🔑📖 KEY VERSE: "And the men took of their victuals, and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD" (JOSHUA 9:14).

People react to things differently. As many people come to Jesus Christ to accept His lordship and offer of salvation when they experience or hear of the supernatural work of God, some others come with open confrontation, bitter hatred and avowed persecution. The same thing happened when the nations in Canaan heard about the exploits and victories of the Israelites.

The people of Gibeon and three other towns in the central highlands, came up with a different approach to defend themselves. They came to sue for peace but through trickery and deception. Some people say if Jacob had not lied to his father, Isaac, he would have missed his father’s blessing. They err. God had promised to bless him and to multiply his seed. He and his mother erroneously thought they could help God to carry out the promise.

Similarly, many believers might wonder why Joshua, that great man of God and other elders of Israel were so easily deceived by this heathen nation of Gibeon. Before collecting victuals from the Gibeonites, they "asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD". This was a great mistake.

Flattery and gifts corrupt and blindfold even people of God when the counsel of the Lord is not sought. A second look at Joshua’s pardon for the Gibeonites shows vividly the grace and mercy of God for sinners who come in total repentance. The Gibeonites’ agreement to serve the Israelites signifies their strong decision and determination to forsake their idolatry and sinful practices and accept the lordship of the God of Israel. The only way sinners can escape the judgment of God is through repentance, not by lies or deception.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: There is no short cut to salvation.

WHAT DOEST THOU HERE?
TEXT: 1 KINGS 19:1-10
KEY VERSE: "And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there; and, behold, the word of the LORD came to him, and he said unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?" (1 KINGS 19:9).

Elijah had doubtless fought a good fight of faith by single-handedly defeating, disgracing and destroying 450 prophets of Baal at the contest on Mount Carmel. Jezebel, the wicked wife of King Ahab, was most aggrieved and thus sent a threatening message to Elijah for what the great prophet had done. She swore never to stop until she destroyed Elijah.
Elijah seemed to have forgotten that the God of heaven who granted him victory on Mount Carmel was still there to protect him. He forgot that God would never lose any battle. As Elijah fled, God reckoned that he was running away from the path of duty and therefore was not in a place he was supposed to be at that point in time. For this reason, God asked him a pertinent question, "What doest thou here, Elijah?" Elijah’s great faith on Mount Carmel seemed to have vaporised at Horeb, the Mount of God.

The great questions every believer should ask himself or herself now are: Am I where I should be? Am I still on the path of duty? Am I planning to run away from where God is using me for His glory because of fear or a threat from a Jezebel or from any wicked personality? Am I planning to quit the ministry because of despair? The counsel of God for you is that you should not allow the fear of man to distract you because the fear of man brings one into a snare and perdition. As a child of God, you should not allow despair or success in ministry to hinder you from continuing in the work of the Lord.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Quitters never win, and winners never quit.

WHERE TO FIND LASTING HELP
ISAIAH 30:18-26

KEY VERSE: "And thine eyes shall hear a word behind thee saying, This is the way, walk ye in it, when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left" (Isaiah 30:21).

A man arrested for hard drug peddling was in his cell in Canada where he found a copy of the New Testament Bible. As he opened it to read for lack of anything else to do, his eyes fell upon Mathew 11:28, where Jesus said – "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest". As he read it again and again, tears of repentance filled his eyes. He prayed to God for mercy and forgiveness. To his greatest surprise, an unspeakable kind of joy filled his erstwhile sorrowful heart. He knew God had forgiven and saved him.

It is a paradox of sort that while God’s good intention and ability seek to safeguard and help His people, they seek alliance with foreign powers that could really not help them against the enemy. The Old Testament is a chronicle of Israel’s repeated failure to seek lasting help from God in trying times.
Today, God continues to call on all humans to return to Him as the only One who has the solution to the myriads of problems confronting them. Advancement in science and technology, as good as it is, has not provided reasonable solutions to all kinds of problems – wars, diseases, natural disasters, political instability and hunger that have plagued mankind since the fall of Adam. But if people will return to God and walk in His commandments, then the peace that has eluded them will return to them. "For thus saith the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel; in returning and in rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength" (Isaiah 30:15).

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The God of peace is the solution to man’s troubles and restlessness.

TOPIC: GOD'S UNFAILING PROMISES

TEXT: ISAIAH 65:17-25

KEY VERSE: "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; and while they are yet speaking, I will hear"  (Isaiah 65:24).

Today’s text opens on a very optimistic note of God’s promise to create new heaven and a new earth. Aside the eschatological perspective, it is equally important to point out its relevance to our current circumstances. There is no reason you should give up in life to discouragement or failure if you can trust His creative power and promises. His word gives the assurance that something new can come out of your inglorious past. You should therefore trust that whatever your past or present has been, your future can be glorious.

His promises, as outlined in the passage encompass the removal of the fear of death and bestowal of longevity. He has also promised to prosper and bless the work of your hands, to rebuke the devourer for you and grant you peace and tranquillity. He also assures us of instant answer to prayers, provision and security. In essence, through God, we can have life in abundance with no lack, no loss and no limitations. It is clear that these great promises are for those referred to as, "my people", "mine elect", and "the seed of the blessed".

The bitter truth from this passage also is the assertion that, "the sinner being hundred years old shall be accursed". The question therefore is, where do you belong? The "blessed seed" or "the accursed". It’s not too late to open a new chapter by allowing God to make your life and character new through cleansing in the blood of Christ. If you are a sinner, you must sincerely repent and ask for forgiveness before He does this in your life. Where you belong determines what you enjoy.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The accursed sinner will not be part of Christ’s glorious kingdom.

TOPIC: THE ESCAPE ROUTE
TEXT: MATTHEW 11:20-30
KEY VERSE: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest"  (Mathew 11:28).

Practical experiences during childhood reveals that, it isn’t all the threats or lies aimed at creating fear in the child that are real. Most times, an inquisitive child soon discovers that nothing like the foretold consequences happens. This often emboldens him/her to flout other instructions believing that there would be no serious adverse consequence after all.
This same scenario, no doubt, plays itself out in the attitude of most people concerning the stern warning of Christ to the religious, carefree and impenitent of the dire consequences of their sinful lifestyle. We need to understand that God is not a man. His words will ever be true and He has appointed a day for judgment of evil men and women. Many justify their rebellion against God on the grounds that many church leaders and religious people commit sin without any consequence.
The Scripture describes the unfortunate condition thus: "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil" (Ecclesiastes 8:11). It should, however, be noted that no sinner will go unpunished, because on the judgment day, God will not be swayed by money, emotion or any other factor.
The sure way of escape is repentance and faith in Christ as revealed through the solemn invitation in our text. Those who reject the invitation of Christ to repentance today will one day face the sordid reality of judgment in hell. Be wise to repent by acknowledging, confessing and forsaking your sins so that heaven can rejoice over you too. Pray for pardon.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: The wheel of God’s judgment may drive slowly, but it is imminent.
